How to Afford Luxury Goods: Advise I would give my Younger Self

October 10, 2016 · 28 Comments

“Cost and worth are very different things.” When I first heard these words in a crowded cinema hall while watching Confessions of a Shopaholic, they meant very little to me. You see, at 20, I was living with my parents, living the easy life and had to pay for nothing.

7 years on, I moved three countries, changed a lot of jobs, earned and spent money and finally truly understand those very wise words; Cost and worth are very different things.

Over the years, I have bought a lot of things, some wise purchases, many others not so much. Had I asked asked myself the following things before buying all of them, I would have been able to save a lot of money and also been able to afford more luxury goods. So, here is my advise to anyone who wants to be able to have luxury goods and also to my younger self!

Don’t spend on frivolous things that might look great at the time, but have no real value or worth. Ask yourself the following questions before buying anything that looks incredible on a high street rack.

  1. It may not be expensive, but is it really worth it?
  2. Why do you like it, is it because you have seen it on someone else, or will it really suit your style?
  3. Will it last over 20 washes?
  4. If you have a certain amount of money only, is it worth spending it on this item, or saving it to buy a better, more luxurious item?
  5. Is it timeless, or will it be on trend for this season only?
  6. Are you sure you have absolutely nothing like it in your collection?
  7. Would your mum have bought this or approve spending money on this item?

If you can answer the above questions without having to rationalise the purchase to yourself, then chances are that the item is worth buying. If not, don’t spend your money on that item. Save that money and you will be able to buy yourself a much better and luxurious item in the future.

Great advice Deepti, particularly weighing up cost and worth. Opting for timeless pieces is a really great tip too, or else you can find yourself trapped with an out-of-date trend!

Nice post. I usually spend more on timeless pieces, and on items that I’ll wear a lot. The things I spent most on are usually my branded items that grow through the years with me. Prada pants, Gucci blazer, Chanel bag – things I know I’ll wear for at least 5-10 years. I can’t say they always last that long because I wear some things so much though. haha.

Yasss, I love it! It’s so true, we all went through a phase where we spent money like crazy just to catch up looking like our neighbor next door. It’s great to pause and think if it is really worth it!

Such great things to ask oneself! Thanks for sharing, Deepti. It can be so tempting to buy something when you get that adrenaline rush -“oooh, that would be so fun to wear! – kind of thing. But in the long run, some of those fancies do turn out to be (very) passing. Hope you are having a great week so far! XO

I always ask myself what my mom would say to my purchase, and that usually gives me my answer! Mommas usually know best šŸ™‚

I think we all learned our lesson through time and trust me, I’ve made many foolish and unnecessary purchases too. These days I’m much wiser and selective about what I buy so no more regrets.

Such good advice and questions to ask yourself! I think any of us bloggers who love fashion go through a phase where we buy too much without asking these questions and get tempted by other bloggers! Bravo on this post! XO
